πŸ€” What is Name Generator GPT?

Name Generator GPT is PsyCat Games' amazing tool to automate name generator creation. It is powered by ChatGPT and can generate dozens of name generators at once.

If you want to create your own name generators, you need an API key from OpenAI. Open the Options and enter the key.

πŸ€“ Where to start?

Familiarize yourself with the interface. It looks more confusing than it is.

Before you can start creating any name generators, open the Options and enter the API key you've got from OpenAI.

Start with the basics:

  1. Enter a list of name generator titles that share the same values for the prompt creation.
  2. If you have an idea of how the names should sound like, you can enter a list of example names for each name generator. Each name generator gets its own line, so separate each example with a semicolon (This symbol ;). If you don't want to give an example for a specific name generator, leave its corresponding line empty.
  3. If the topic of all name generators is younger than 2021 or it's quite niche, enter something in the context. Use singluar! (speak of "name generator" not "name generators")
  4. Enter the necessary values in the prompt creation.
  5. Hit the Generate Name Generator button and wait until every name generator is done.
  6. Don't close the tab until everything is done and you've downloaded all the generated files. You don't have to download the "names.txt" file, but it helps if something was made incorrectly. So better check and test your name generators before closing the tab πŸ˜‰

🀯 Interface

Titles

Enter a list of name generators that you want Name Generator GPT to generate. Ideally, these name generators share the commonalities found in the Prompt Creation.

Example Names

Entering examples is optional but is advised. Each name generator gets its own line, so separate each example with a semicolon (This symbol ;).

If you don't want to give an example for a specific name generator, leave its corresponding line empty.

Context

Giving context is optional. But if your topic is younger than 2021 or quite niche, you'll get a better result that way.

Keep in mind to write in singular, not plural! (name generator, not name generators!) Because ChatGPT doesn't know it generates a bunch, it only knows of the current name generator it generates.

Prompt Creation

Self-explanatory: Here is where you can influence how the name generators should look like and who they are for.

Gender

Does the name generator need to be split in genders? If yes, check this. If the name generator is about objects or something similar, don't check it.

Surnames

If you check this, the name generator generates a list of surnames as well. If you don't want surnames, uncheck this. If you only want surnames, uncheck it, too! Otherwise it will be confused.

Split Names

If you're generating real names or words, check false. If you want organic or fantastic names, check true.

If it's true, Name Generator GPT will automatically decide how to split the names. But sometimes, it's gonna screw up. That's what the Quick Fix is for.

Console

The console gives you feedback on what is currently happening and what was generated last. If an error occurs, it will tell you.

πŸ”§ Quick Fix

This page is amazing if ChatGPT decided to screw up the splitting part. Hopefully, you did download the names.txt of the name generator that has the issues. Enter the original generated names and enter the list into Names To Split.

Split by

  • Syllable: For fantastical names that don't root in a real word, this is the way to go. This is handled without ChatGPT, so use it as much as you like.

Examples for this: Legolas, Briogard, Soondra
  • Word: For fantastical names that do root in a real word, this is the way to go. This is handled by ChatGPT, so only use it when really needed.

Examples for this: Blackthorn, Silvertongue, Goldstar

Return

  • Array: Choose this if you want to enter the values directly into the corresponding js file.
  • Text: Choose this if you're entering the values into the Name Generator Creator. If it say's "(empty)", don't copy it. It's just there so you know that this field is really empty. Otherwise, it might just be the first line that is empty.

Result

Here you'll get the results splitted the way you wanted. Press the copy button, so you can easily paste the values where you need them.

πŸ€– Options

The options menu is quite empty currently. If you have ideas for good options to add, contact Steve.

API Key:

Before anything can be generated, enter a working API key from OpenAI in the options.

Reset Fields:

Resets everything to the standard values.

Example Article:

Enter the index.md content of a name generator that has an amazing article. Name Generator GPT will use exactly this article as a template, so don't mess with this one if you don't need to.

πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ Generation

After you've entered everything, you're safe to hit the Generate GPT name generators button.

Depending on how many name generator titles you've entered, Name Generator GPT may take a while until everything is done. Lean back and enjoy the show.

Do something else in the meantime, or check whatever the console has to say.

🎨 Final touches

After a name generator is complete, you can download the zip file containing everything but the feature-image.jpg.

Open the index.md file and see if everything looks like it should be, and change whatever you dislike.

Upload the generated js file to our Name Generator Creator via "Import Data" and check the following things:

  • Is the data usable or does it need to be fixed? (Check out Quick Fix if that is the case)
  • Is everything split the way you need it to?
  • Are the resulting names good enough or do you need to change some things?
  • Does everything else make sense as well?

Change whatever is needed and download the name generator file again via "Export Data". Replace the original file with the new one!

After all that, your name generator is good to go! 😎

πŸ‘€ Things To Look Out For

There isn't a lot to look out for, actually, but here's a short list:

  • The name generators you enter in the Titles should share the same prompts and context, or you'll end up with quite weird name generators.
  • Check every name generator after it is generated. Sometimes, there might be a small bug that won't let it work properly. If that's the case, look into it. If you can't find the issue, contact Steve.
  • If the name generator failed more than twice, contact Steve.

πŸ¦„ FAQ

Any questions? Read this FAQ before contacting anyone.

Who do I ask if I have questions or a problem with Name Generator GPT?

Steve created it and probably knows best. Contact him only if your question can't be answered here.

My name generator takes very long to generate. Why?

The generation process takes time. But every now and then, it takes even longer. Maybe your desired names are quite long. Just wait and do something else in the meantime. If an error occurs, you'll be notified anyway.

My name generator had an error. What shall I do?

Check the error file. Probably something of your input is incorrect.

Why is there no retry button like in QuizGPT?

Unlike QuizGPT, this tool doesn't feature a retry button, but instead just retries up to 3 times on its own. The reason is quite simple: Most of the time, the error is a fetch error, which means you can't avoid it, but can only retry anyway. So if you still get an error, your input must be the reason and clicking retry multiple times won't solve anything. So check the error file and find out what the reason for the error is.

Can I close the tab after I start the generation?

Don't! Currently, Name Generator GPT only works with your local browser and not via a server. This means that it is not saved! Download everything before you close it. This means you can also force close the generation if you accidentally started the generation.

Can I close the tab after I have downloaded all the name generators?

Yes. That's the only time you're allowed to close the tab 😜 (except you accidentally start the generation). If you haven't checked all files before, download the names.txt as well, just to be safe.

I accidentally started the generation. How do I interrupt it?

Just close the tab. Everything will be lost that way.

I accidentally closed the tab while something was generated or before I could download everything. What shall I do?

You fucked up and need to start over again. There is currently no way to retrieve anything that was deleted.
